ISSUES IN HORTICULTURE: Used the five forces diagram to analyze the landscape design industry to determine rivals, threat of entrants, buyer and supplier powers, and threat of substitutions. This writing intensive class taught me how to research an industry and compile it into a well organized essay.
PLANT PROPAGATION: I learned how to propagate herbaceous and woody ornamental plants depending on the time of year and stage of growth. Grafting, tissue culture, dividing, and layering are methods I learned about as well as how to transplant and acclimatize once established.
NURSERY PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT: Had hands-on experience at the Texas A&M Horticulture Club nursery to visualize and experience dividing and transplanting plants, overhead irrigation efficiency, and proper nursery layouts. During lecture, I learned how to create a business model and how to design a nursery layout to maximize efficiency.
TREES AND SHRUBS IN SUSTAINABLE BUILT ENVIRONS: This plant identification course focused on woody ornamental trees and shrubs that are commonly used in the landscape. In lab, I learned how to identify based on their bud growth, leaf arrangement, bark patterns, and leaf shape. This enables me to identify trees and shrubs in the dormant season. In lecture, I learned how the plants are used in the landscapes and what their growth requirements are.
LANDSCAPE PLANT MATERIAL: This plant identification course focused on ornamental annuals and perennials that are commonly used in the landscape. In lab, I learned how to identify based on leaf arrangement and flower bloom structure. In lecture, I learned how the plants are used in the landscapes and what their growth requirements are.
LANDSCAPE GRAPHICS: Introduction course that taught me the basics of landscape design and how to draw trees, shrubs, grass, and perennials in plant, elevation, and prospective drawings by hand.
LANDSCAPES ESTIMATING, BIDDING, AND SALES: Designs were looked over to count the number of plant materials and calculate the total hardscape materials to determine an estimate to bid to the client. I learned the components of a contract and bid document and used an Asset spreadsheet to determine the final bid of the design. I also was able to practice scheduling a landscape crew to maximize efficiency.
GENERAL ENTOMOLOGY: I learned how to classify insects based on their body structure and their impact in the environment.
PLANT PATHOLOGY: Hands-on lab that allowed me to collect pathogen samples and inoculate healthy plants to evaluate the outcomes. Lecture taught me the growing environment of pathogens and how to prevent infections.
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY MANAGEMENT: 10-week course that prepared me to evaluate work environments and to ensure the safety of employees.
HONEY BEE BIOLOGY: Learned the biology of honey bees and how to distinguish them from other bee species. Understood what is required to establish and maintain a healthy honey bee colony. This is where my passion of honey bees began.
BEEKEEPING: Hands-on experience of establishing a honey bee colony. I managed my own hive for four months and monitored the growth of the colony. I also learned how to conduct pest management practices and how to harvest honey.
LANDSCAPE DESIGN 1: Created graphic representations of plan view, elevation view, and one-point perspective view. Developed landscape designs and planting plans for clients through coursework. .
LANDSCAPE DESIGN 2: Used computer-aided-drafting to produce site layouts, grading, and planting plans. Conducted client interviews.
Landscape Bidding, Estimating, and Sales: Learned the landscape bidding, estimating, and sales process as well as business management. Created bids from landscape plans and specifications to be presented in class. Learned various overhead recover systems including SORS, DORS, and MORS.
